How much of your bonus do you keep?

The bonus is treated as extra income spread over 12 months: one twelfth is added to the monthly salary, the extra income tax that causes is worked out, and that difference × 12 is the tax on the bonus. Enter both amounts to see it step by step.

Rates per Income Tax Proclamation 1395/2025 (effective July 2025) and Labour Proclamation 1156/2019 where noted. Estimates only — verify with the Ministry of Revenues or your advisor.

ETB

Regular monthly taxable salary. Its own income tax is already withheld through monthly payroll.

ETB

13th-month salary, annual or performance bonus.

How bonuses are taxed in Ethiopia.

There is no separate bonus tax rate under Income Tax Proclamation 1395/2025; a bonus is employment income. This calculator treats it as extra income spread over 12 months: one twelfth of the bonus is added to the monthly salary, income tax is worked out on that total and on the salary alone, and the monthly difference × 12 is the tax on the bonus. The salary's own tax is already withheld through monthly payroll, so only the increase counts. It's an estimate — confirm the treatment with the Ministry of Revenues or your advisor.

One deduction does not apply: pension. Contributions are based on basic salary only, so a bonus carries no 7% employee or 11% employer pension. Check your regular month's numbers with the salary calculator, and if you're leaving a job, severance follows different rules — see the severance guide.

Frequently asked questions.

  • Is a bonus taxable in Ethiopia?

Yes. A bonus is employment income. This calculator taxes it as extra income spread over 12 months on top of the monthly salary — there is no separate flat bonus tax rate.

  • Is pension deducted from a bonus?

No. Pension contributions (7% employee, 11% employer) are calculated on basic salary only — a bonus is not pensionable, so the only statutory deduction on a bonus is income tax.

  • Why can a bonus cost more tax than my salary's rate suggests?

Each twelfth of the bonus lands on top of the salary, so it's taxed at the salary's marginal rate — and can push the monthly total into a higher bracket. With a 12,000 ETB salary (30% bracket), a 36,000 ETB bonus adds 3,000 a month, taking the total to 15,000 — past the 14,000 line into the 35% bracket: 12 × (3,200 − 2,250) = 11,400 ETB.

  • How is a 13th-month salary or annual bonus taxed?

The same way as any bonus in this calculator: spread over 12 months on top of the regular salary, with the extra income tax × 12 as the tax.

  • How do I calculate the tax on a bonus by hand?

Divide the bonus by 12 and add it to the monthly taxable salary. Work out income tax on that total and on the salary alone, subtract, and multiply the difference by 12. Example: salary 8,000, bonus 16,000 → tax on 9,333.33 1,483.33 − tax on 8,000 1,150 = 333.33 × 12 = 4,000 ETB.
