What salary gives that take-home?

Enter the monthly take-home pay you want someone to receive and get the basic salary to put in the offer — worked backwards through the current income tax brackets and the 7% employee pension, with gross pay and what it costs the employer in total.

Rates per Income Tax Proclamation 1395/2025 (effective July 2025) and Labour Proclamation 1156/2019 where noted. Estimates only — verify with the Ministry of Revenues or your advisor.

Pension scheme applies

Private-organization pension: 7% employee / 11% employer, on basic salary.

ETB

What the employee should receive each month, after income tax and pension.

ETB

Held fixed. Non-taxable up to ¼ of basic salary, max 2,200 ETB — the excess is taxed.

How a salary is grossed up in Ethiopia.

Income tax is progressive and the 7% pension comes off basic salary, so you can't just add a flat percentage to the take-home you want. Every extra birr of basic salary is taxed at your marginal rate and loses 7% to pension — so the calculator works backwards through the brackets to find the exact basic salary that lands on your target.

Allowances are held at the amounts you enter. The transport exemption grows with basic salary (¼ of basic, capped at 2,200 ETB), and the calculator accounts for that too.

Worked example: for a take-home of 7,650 ETB with pension, the basic salary is 10,000 ETB — income tax of 1,650 ETB and pension of 700 ETB come off it.

Why this matters for job offers

Candidates in Ethiopia usually negotiate on take-home pay, while contracts and payroll run on basic salary. Grossing up correctly avoids offers that come in short after tax — and shows you the real cost to the business before you commit.

Frequently asked questions.

  • What basic salary gives 10,000 ETB take-home in Ethiopia?

With the 7% pension, a basic salary of about 13,730 ETB gives 10,000 ETB take-home: income tax is 2,769 ETB (30% bracket) and pension 961 ETB. Without pension it's about 12,357 ETB.

  • What basic salary gives 20,000 ETB take-home?

With pension, about 30,948 ETB basic: income tax of 8,782 ETB in the 35% bracket and 2,166 ETB employee pension. The employer's total cost is about 34,353 ETB including the 11% employer pension.

  • Why can't I just add the tax rate to the net salary?

Because tax is calculated on the gross, not the net, and the rate changes by bracket. Adding 35% to a net figure overshoots; adding a lower rate undershoots. Working backwards through the brackets — what this calculator does — is the only way to land exactly.

  • Are allowances included?

Yes — enter transport, taxable and non-taxable allowances and they are held fixed while the basic salary is solved. Transport allowance is exempt up to ¼ of basic salary (max 2,200 ETB), which the calculator applies automatically.

  • Which tax rates does it use?

The employment income tax brackets in Income Tax Proclamation 1395/2025, effective July 2025, and the private-organization pension of 7% employee / 11% employer on basic salary. Results are estimates — verify with the Ministry of Revenues or your advisor.
