The ERP Consultant Career Path in Africa

ERP implementation is its own profession

When most people think about software careers, they think about software engineers — the people writing code. ERP implementation consultants are a different profession with overlapping but distinct skills. They sit at the intersection of business process knowledge, software configuration, change management and customer relationship work. They are typically the bridge between an ERP platform and the customer making it work.

For Ethiopia and the wider African market, ERP consulting is a growing field with strong long-term career value. This article describes what the work actually looks like, what skills matter, and how the career develops.

What ERP implementation consultants do day-to-day

A typical week for a mid-level NYLOS implementation consultant:

  • Discovery interviews with customer stakeholders to understand current processes and pain points.
  • Process mapping to document the as-is and design the to-be.
  • System configuration in NYLOS — chart of accounts, payroll rules, approval workflows, role permissions, reports.
  • Data migration support — working with the customer's data extracted from legacy systems, mapping to NYLOS structures, validating.
  • User training delivery — workshops with the customer's finance, HR or operations teams.
  • Issue resolution during user-acceptance testing and go-live.
  • Customer-relationship work — managing expectations, escalating risks, building trust.

The mix shifts by project phase. Discovery is heavy in week 1-2; configuration peaks in weeks 3-5; training in weeks 5-7; go-live support in week 8-10+.

Skills that matter

Five core skills that separate strong ERP consultants from average ones:

  1. Business process literacy — understanding how finance, HR, inventory, sales and operations actually work in real businesses. Not just the textbook version.
  2. Software-configuration fluency — quickly internalizing the configuration model of the ERP and producing accurate setups.
  3. Communication — explaining technical concepts to business stakeholders; explaining business concepts to engineering teams.
  4. Project management — managing scope, time and customer expectations.
  5. Domain depth — specializing in a vertical (manufacturing, microfinance, NGOs) becomes a multiplier on the other skills.

The skills compound. A consultant who's strong on business process literacy but weak on communication delivers half the value they could.

Career arc

The typical career arc we see at NYLOS:

  • Year 1: Junior consultant on small projects under senior supervision. Focused on configuration tasks and supporting training.
  • Year 2-3: Mid-level consultant leading smaller projects independently. Owning customer relationships through implementation.
  • Year 4-5: Senior consultant leading larger or more complex projects. Mentoring junior consultants.
  • Year 5+: Either practice lead (managing a team of consultants), domain specialist (recognized expert in a vertical), or principal consultant (working on the most strategic deployments).

Some consultants move into product management, sales, or back-end engineering after 3-5 years. Others stay deep in implementation work — both paths are valid.

Compensation

ERP consulting compensation in Ethiopia/Africa is typically:

  • Lower than engineering at the junior level (configuration skills are easier to acquire than coding).
  • Comparable to engineering at mid-level (the business-context skills become a multiplier).
  • Higher than engineering at senior level (specialist consultants command premiums; senior practice leads even more so).

Plus: consultants who develop deep domain expertise (e.g., microfinance ERP, manufacturing ERP) can command consulting premiums significantly above software-engineering compensation.

Travel and time commitment

ERP consulting typically involves on-site customer time. For NYLOS implementations:

  • 30-50% of consultant time is on-site at the customer (Addis Ababa or regional).
  • 50-70% is at NYLOS office or remote.

Implementation projects have predictable cadence — kickoff, configuration, training, go-live — so the work-life pattern is more predictable than some software roles where on-call duties create unpredictable interruption.

What we look for at NYLOS

When NYLOS hires implementation consultants, the profile we look for:

  • Operational experience preferred but not required: people who've worked in finance, HR or operations themselves often make excellent consultants because they understand the user's daily reality.
  • Strong communication in English and Amharic.
  • Business judgment: ability to make pragmatic recommendations rather than ivory-tower designs.
  • Curiosity about how businesses work: most successful consultants find this genuinely interesting.
  • Travel willingness — implementation is partly customer-on-site.

Engineering background is not required. Some of our best consultants have backgrounds in accounting, operations or HR rather than CS.

How implementation consultants stay relevant long-term

The skills that compound over a career:

  • Vertical depth — specializing in one or two industries.
  • Configuration breadth — learning the full surface of the ERP (and ideally multiple ERPs over a career).
  • Change management — getting better at the human side of implementation.
  • Domain expertise — IFRS for SMEs, labor law, sector-specific regulations.

Consultants who treat the career as continuous learning typically thrive. Consultants who stop learning after their first year typically stagnate.
